Best of 2024, pt III

We made it to part III of my Best of 2024 list, phew! This is 8-10.

Catch up on part I and part II.

Ezekiel cereal, pumpkin milk I picked up from Happier Grocery, ground flax seeds, goji berries

Ground flax seeds

Flax seeds and chia seeds are my primary source of omega-3 fatty acids. I wrote about omega-3 fatty acids previously.

Omega-3s are important components of the membranes that surround each cell in your body.

Omega-3 fatty acids are important for heart health, eye health, regulation of inflammation, and brain function. If I can protect my brain, I will. There are few things more important.

Benefits of flax seeds

  • Flax is the richest plant source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) in the North American diet. ALA is a type of omega-3 fatty acid.

  • High in lignans, a type of phytoestrogen linked to a lower risk of developing osteoporosis, heart disease and breast cancer. Lignans also have antioxidant properties.

  • High in fiber & potassium

  • Good source of protein & vitamin B1

How I use

The easiest way to get freshly ground flax or chia seeds into our diets is in a smoothie. Your Vitamix will grind the seeds as it blends the rest of your ingredients.

But I’m not an everyday smoothie person.

Here’s what I do when I’m not making smoothies:

  • Grind whole flax seeds in a Krups coffee grinder

  • Add the freshly ground seeds on top of Ezekiel cereal, overnight oats, or plant-based yogurt

Can packaged ground flax seeds be substituted for freshly ground seeds?
What about whole flax seeds?

Seeds should be freshly ground to supply the maximum omega-3 fatty acid benefits.

How I use

I got my bloodwork done in May. My sodium level came back below range. Not unthinkable given my diet is naturally low in sodium and I was sweating (summer in the city, fewer hours spent inside a frigid office building).

The remedy was adding more table salt to my diet. Not the kind that comes in processed foods and sodium-heavy restaurant dishes.

Enter the lime drink. I made one of these daily all summer, usually around 3:00 pm.

Feeling over-caffeinated, or otherwise unbalanced?
Feeling the low-energy, brain-foggy, next-day effects of alcohol?
Deep in the afternoon energy slump?

Try 32-ounces of lime drink.

Feeling great?

Try 32-ounces of lime drink for better skin, digestion, immunity, blood sugar, iron absorption, and healthy weight loss.

Let me know how it goes.

Mate the Label organic cotton activewear

I’m wearing workout gear six days a week. I better like it.

If you’re someone who wears a sports bra,
If you aren’t fit model-sized,
If you understand the never-ending search for a sports bra that fits your shape, looks good and feels good,
We get each other.

Here’s why I like this one:

  • Organic cotton

If you’ve ever had a skin rash underneath your clothing, trying a different fabric may solve the issue.

If you want to support small brands using non-toxic materials, focused on sustainability.

  • Flattering

  • It’s not going to fall apart after a few months of washing.

I have no affiliation with Mate the Label.
